Acrobat
Document exchange software from Adobe Systems, Inc. Acrobat provides
a platform-independent means of creating, viewing, and printing documents.
Acrobat can convert a DOS, Windows, UNIX or Macintosh document into
a Portable Document Format (PDF) which can be displayed on any computer
with an Acrobat reader. The Acrobat reader can be downloaded free
from the Internet.
Aliasing and Anti-aliasing
In computer graphics, aliasing is the stairstepped appearance of
diagonal or curved lines. Anti-aliasing smooths the stairstep look
in a bitmapped image. When diagonal or curved lines are put in bitmapped
form, these shapes must be made with square pixels; any lines that
are not vertical or horizontal have a stair-stepped appearance.
Anti-aliasing changes the pixels along the edges of the line into
varying shades of gray or in-between color, in order to make the
edge appear smoother.
Background Processing
Automatic execution of print or other function without disturbing
computer processing.
Batch Processing
Type of computer processing in which similiar tasks are grouped
and handled sequentially to simplify operations.
Bit-map Graphics
A way of displaying images on a computer screen in which each picture
is represented as an array of little squares called pixels. Each
pixel is stored in a specific location in memory and corresponds
to one or more bits.
Binary Code
Code that makes use of only two distinct characters, 1 and 0, or
on and off.
Camera Ready
Ready for printing. A page layout (which may contain type, images,
or both) that is ready for printing goes to the camera department
where negatives are shot, which are then used to make plates for
the printing press. New computer technology is evolving which can
bypass the camera and prepress stages, using a digital press to
print directly from a computer file.
cpi
Characters Per Inch. A measure used with typefaces.
dpi
Dots per inch. A measure of the resolution of printers, scanners
and monitors. The more dots per inch, the higher the resolution:
600 dpi would mean 600 x 600 = 360,000 dots per square inch.
Duplex Printing
Printing on two sides of the page. Using both sides of a piece of
paper.
Electronic Publishing
Use of computers as front end to printing.
EPS
Encapsulated PostScript. A graphics file format that can be used
with many different computers and printers. EPS files can be imported
into most desktop publishing software.
Font
A complete set of type characters in a particular style.
Formatted Text
Text which has control codes indicating the fonts bold or italic
type margins indents columns tabs headers and footers and other
attributes.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. A client/server protocol for exchanging
files with a host computer. Examples are Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem,
Kermit and Fetch.
